Hi... Had no idea which forum to use for this - perhaps it needs a forum of its own? Somewhere for people to ask for practical home help or day to day advice on living alone etc.... Anyway. Back to my question. Hopefully some of the older members will be able to help here.

When I first moved into my apartment I noticed the washing machine had water in it. I put it on a drain cycle and got rid of the water. I then gave it a nice long full wash cycle at a VERY high temperature (90 degrees). I did my first wash last week and it seemed ok. I have just gone back to use the washer and it was full of water again. Where is this water coming from? What should I do?

I think you have clog in the drain somewhere. Call a plumber.

Call your landlord. They're responsible for maintaining the plumbing and the washer if it came with the apartment.

If I understand correctly that it's filling up slowly when not in use then either the valves in the washer are not closing completely, meaning it's filling up with fresh water, or the drain leading out of the apartment is clogged and water from other sources (shower, sink, etc) is backing up into it. The latter is potentially a worse situation, but either way you should expect it to be fixed before it gets worse.

since the water isn't fresh (smells a bit yacky) should I assume the latter?

They have check valves they can install to keep water from backing up into the machine.

Bug your landlord about it.

Tip: If you have a fire saftey issue, don't bug your landlord, bug the fire dept. Landlords always listen to the fire dept, especially when fines can be leveyed out.

The washer has a problem where the valves that control fresh water are leaking. It smells bad because the water mildews as it is in the washer.

It is not other pipes backing up into the washer because there is not a closed drain on a washer. It simply drains by a hose put into the larger pipe/drain at the washer hookup area.

So, if water from another drain source was backing up, it would spill on the floor around the washer, not into the washer itself.

It has begun Wooyay.

Our records, although incomplete, indicate that late in the year 2005, Washing Machines worldwide began to act up, causing their owners no end of hassle.

This is a sign that it has begun already.

You might try turning off the hot and cold spickets the washer is attached to when not in use. Its also a good idea when going on vacation-Ive heard many a horror story of people returning home to flooded homes, apts etc. due to a hose burst or such. 8O

My machine decided to trap all my clothes in it for an entire day. Damn thing was like a safe and I'd say I put the entire load through about 3 washes before it decided to open. Washing machines are evil people. Fear their watery madness

NOOOOO. Don't peel. You should just snap the bottoms off - it will break in the right place. Then wash and boil. The tips are a delicacy :)
