Well I have never done it on my own, but I would grandma in the frequently, especially around canning time. One of the things she would do is boil about 30 plums with ten peaches, then we would dump the water out and then pour the hot fruit into a big tub of ice, she they peel easier that way. another thing she did was put some herbs in a cheesecloth bag while the boiling was going on, but I don't know what all went in the bag, but cloves where one ingredient.
