Isn't art just supposed to be beautiful/meaningful?

I have posted a few on the artist showcase. I also have a deviant art. I just don't use it often because my roommates started griping about it, telling me they where hurt that their opinions where not enough and that my work was pleasing but not impressive . . . so I use it very little, mostly when they are not around. Here is the link tho!

I really like the colours you use. You've got a unique style, which is always good. Are they all oil pastels or do you use soft pastels too?

Your roommates seem really bizarrely controlling and overbearing.

Actually they are all soft pastels. I have a few oil pastels in the deviart folder but it found them very hard to handle between the color combinations I like and using vegetable oil on the paper half the time turned messy. I needed to use bits of oil with q-tips for blending.

I love my art style, but one of my roommate says that most of my pieces look the same and identifiable as mine, and that this was no good.

On a different note. Art is very soothing to me it has become one of my strongest special interests other than playing eq2 and collecting historical information of the Victorian era as well as ancient history(not actual dates and events but everyday life, styles of clothing, currency etc).

I know that the last debacle started because I wanted that paper or a 10 pack of twelve soft pastels box that included three shades of red, a color i combine with black prominently. I never saw art as a waste of space and I spent years straying away because I did not think I had the talent. Now i feel more comfortable about it, just for them to bring me down regularly.

This is another all-time fav piece of mine. Is my art really just . . eye pleasing? Is it that bad that it could be cataloged as mediocre?

It IS meaningful though, from what I know his works have a story behind them.

He has never been one of my interests . . . so i have no clue.

I don't think it's too profitable to worry too much about categorizing your work unless you're trying to sell it. At least for me, one huge thing I've learned about abstract art (by studying it and making it) is that the process is paramount. In the end, it's about what you think and feel as you make the art. If making art makes you happy or enlightened, that is enough. Anything else is secondary.

I usually feel very good while I do it, each stroke is like, well what I guess a good conversation feels like for some people.

All art is meaningful to the person creating it, but everyone has their own tastes and while I think honesty is best it's worth noting the effort that went into it.

Hence why I hate Pollock and Rothko but can understand the appeal of Picasso.

As far as the quality of the art I like the use of color but not the subject...but like people are saying here your happiness matters most.
