That song that was on Family Guy recently, 'The Bird is the Word'. I just hate it  People at work went through a phase of singing it all the time so I would cover my ears and run away.

Let me fill you in with some details on that song. It's actually called "Surfin' Bird" and was recorded in 1963 by a garage rock band called The Trashmen. It was a Top 5 hit when it was released and its appeared on a bunch of compilations since then, but man, that "Family Guy" episode has made it inescapable almost.

I've never seen 'Family Guy', yet I knew what song Saspie was referring to. The Ramones did a cover of it on one of their albums, although I can't remember which.

Am I one of the few Aspies here
who LOVE "I Kissed a Girl?"

Catchy, yes. Annoying, no.

*AA starts singing "I Kissed a Girl/I Kissed a Guy" very loud  *

About Katy Perry, she was raised in a very conservative
household where the children were allowed
little to no access to secular music.

Katy Perry did start out in the religious scene,
but was "discovered" in 2004.

One more thing, her surname isn't Perry. It's Hudson.

I did some "research" and found this out about her.
Interesting, huh?

And yeah, she is very hot!

Well, now, I have a thing or two to say on the subject. I could probably, given time and undesirable effort, think of a list as long as my leg of songs that have tormented me over the years, but I'll go with the ones that pop to the surface first.

Achey Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus was the first one I thought of. Indeed, it stands still as the worst musical fad I have ever encountered. Everyone else loved it and I hated it.

And to think the creep has now sold his daughter to the public. WHY?

Now, for truly, almost obscenely catchy songs... most troubling because they're in a billion commercials:

This one's not a bad cover, I don't know who did the original, but it is deadly catchy:

In fact, I'd download this version if it wasn't so... you know.

And this one, which I just hate:

I could find more...

Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves.

Gets stuck in my head, and makes me happy for about 5 minutes... then it becomes really annoying.

Achey Breaky Heart segues into 'Gimme 3 steps', which I surreptitiously played in the background while the rest of the band was playing the 1st...;0

BTO was just BO to me, and T'd me off even in the 70s...

The Romantics did 'What I like about you', which would pack a dance floor in the late 70s...

the 70s gave the world more bad music...;)

the Macarena is probably up there.

OOO! I remembered another stand out! Electric Avenue!

You like it at first, then before long you realize you can't hear anything else, no matter where you go, no matter what you do.

And the 80's had a lot like this:

The song starts a lil ways in. Anyway, they're the kind you really like at first until you keep hearing the chorus in your sleep. "Come on, Eileen" is another of these.

My kids are great finders of such things... they sing Jingle Bells with different words all year, as well as Deck the Halls, Do You Know the Muffin Man and various folk songs...

"Surfin Bird" mixes two different songs by The Rivingtons. The first is called "The Bird is the Word".

The second is "Papa oom mau mau"

The Psychotronic film guide would give extra praise to any movie just for including the latter song... The famous E.T from 1982, for instance.

The most infamous use of "Surfin' Bird" was in 1972's Pink Flamingos. Those who have seen it know what I mean...

They covered it. That's the version I prefer if I listen to it at all.

Some great suggestions so far.

One I shamelessly love:

One I hate: "Accidentally In Love" by the Counting Crows (though I do like some of the Crows' songs, just not this one.

And one that has been stuck in my head for the past couple of days, but won't make it into a top list of catchiest songs because if it had it would have been a bigger hit... I love it, though:

'Buddy', by De La Soul, Q-Tip, Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, Latifah, and others...

Ps. I can't embed the Youtube in my post despite the option not being disabled. Is it because HTML is off? How do I put HTML on? Thx
