Lately I've been reading the epic George RR Martin saga, A Song of Ice and Fire. These books are HUGE! They are about a civil war that takes place in a quasi-medival land called Westeros. Each book is told from several points of view, rather than focusing on one character. There are four books currently published, but there's a fifth one coming "sometime" (I put that in quotes because no one, not even George R.R. Martin himself, knows when it will be finished. Here's hoping he doesn't suffer the same fate as Robert Jordan). The four books currently available are:
A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows--have yet to read this one
My favorite characters in the series are:
Queen Cersei, (actually, I love to hate her. She is chillingly evil),
Arya Stark (do not mess with this little girl. Not unless you want her to stick you with her sword's pointy end  ),
Sansa Stark (poor thing. Martin just loves to give this girl grief :( )
Tyrion Lannister (an imp that you just can't help but like).
Catelyn Stark (matriarch of the Starks. also gets lots of grief, not to mention undeserved fan hatred imho.)
A word of warning to anyone who might read these books: they are VERY violent (poor Sansa is raped twice!) and vulgar. If you can't handle graphic violence and sexuality, I advise you to not read them.
So is anyone else into these books?

probably my favorite book series ever, I rate it even above Tolkein's Work.

as for some things...

Cersei = more or less a grey area when it comes to morality. I dont consider her good, nor evil, and this goes for most every other character in the series.

Sansa stark = Deconstruction of the classic fantasy princess.

As for favorite characters....

Arya Stark
Sandor "The Hound" Clegane
Petyr "LittleFinger" Baelish
Tyrion "The Imp" Lannister (He is a deformed m***et btw XD)
Jaime Lannister
Margaery Tyrell
Melisandre
Davos
Theon Greyjoy
Asha Greyjoy
Euron Greyjoy
Oberyn Martell
Jon Snow
Greatjon Umber

And the latest rumor is that GRRM is just about done with the next two books.

Stannis is an Aspie. Maybe Tywin.

Actually, just for fun I was trying to prove Jaime is an Aspie, just to see whether I really could make a case for absolutely anything.

However, you are incorrect. Sansa is not raped twice. As of the end of book four, Sansa has not lost her virginity, despite at least three close calls.

It is way too grim. But I still love it. Heh.

Sadly, A Feast for Crows appears to somehow have avoided being translated to my language, and I'm having a lot of trouble acquiring English-language books here.

Oh, I guess I misinterpreted things. But I'm sure we can all agree the girl goes through some serious hell. Martin does a great deconstruction of the princess who gets it all.

I used to read the series.

I finished but well, as you know, the next book hasn't come out yet.

Yeah, stannis does come off as one as well as Davos IMO.

and yeah, Sansa still has her cherry. I know she has come close to being raped on at least one occassion though. Its been a while since I have read the books though.

Here is hoping for a late 2010-early 2011 release for A dance of Dragons.

oh, and I cant wait for the HBO adaptation, Ihope they dont screw it up too bad.

They're already in the process of screwing it up. They cast WHO as Jaime?! No. No, you do NOT get to cast that ugly idiot as my favorite character! (No offense to unpronounceable-name-dude (can't remember the spelling, either), who actually seems kind of cool. Just... not Jaime.)

Yes, the Hound attacks her and demands a song but thinks better of demanding anything else. Marillion attacks her but is stopped by a knight. And in the riots in KL, she's nearly raped by the mob, but the Hound rescues her.

My friend is reading the series and toward the beginning of A Storm of Swords, I heard her quip that someone should cut off Jaime's right hand to teach him a lesson. When she finishes AFFC, I'm just gonna start asking her what fates she thinks the characters deserve.

The first book was on par with the Prof. The rest are below; there are some good moments, but they're buried under thousands of pages of tedium. You can tell he used to write for friggin' TV, he pads like a pro and thrives on dropping obscure hints that he never bothers to follow up. ^^ If he ever does release another book I'll be extremely annoyed at having to suffer through the rest of the series again just to get up to speed.

And I can't see Jaime mentioned without thinking of Deus Ex and the Blue Beetle.

It's been a while since I read these. I loved the complexity, and found the characterisations quite shocking at times. Although I can't define what it is, there is something very different about GRRMs style which makes it compelling reading - even for a compulsive reader!

Grim and brutal, but one of the best series ever.
