Today I got some critique for a commission I was working on and the client described my drawing as "elegant".My life drawing teacher used to say something like that as well (he also said that I should take bigger risks with shape and gesture). I always feel like my drawings look messy and I often go over parts over and over until it feels right. I find it very surprising (and flattering, of course) that people feel my work looks elegant.

How have others described your drawings or writing or music or whatever form of art or craft? Has it ever surprised you?

My highest compliment was when a friend reported to me that when he played my demo tape to a friend, the friend apparently exclaimed enthusiastically "Dusty Springfield!" when he heard my singing voice. I could never claim that's accurate, but the idea that somebody thought I sound like that, well, I will always treasure that. Another person came up to me after a gig I had played and said "you sing like an angel."

On the downside....another person reported that when he stuck my demo tape in the player, his wife said "That's not her. That can't be really her. " She didn't like me much already, so I got the impression it wasn't a "Wow!" positive reaction but likely more said in derision....My speaking voice doesn't sound like my singing voice but still, it was typical of when people haven't believed I'm capable of something actually good. I try to remember the genuine compliments and the nice people who seemed to really enjoy what I did.

People who have read my fiction describe it as filled with vivid imagery. One former friend had even said my writing gave him goose bumps.

In college I had several professors call my writing "brilliant" and I would regularly get asked to read essays to my classes. I had an essay published in a film magazine when I was 20 and the editor thought I was a college professor, based on the writing. I have had many people call my writing eloquent. "Da bomb" was a recent compliment (meant as tongue-in-cheek) :)
