According to the "half your age +7" rule, you're fine if you're 22 or under (or 23 for dating someone who's 18.5). After that, the older you are, the more unusual it is. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with it though. I'm almost 24, and I'd be open to dating an 18 year-old if there was some compatibility there.

When I saw the movie “Summer of ‘42,” I felt a strong identification with the young guy.

Erm, I think that's bigamy.

Also, when they start telling you it's weird.

I had a strong connection to Ponyboy Curtis in SE HInton's "The Outsiders". As a 15yr old I felt Ponyboy had a pretty terrible life and felt a bond, Now I look back with my 50 yr old eyes at the same story and see it at a deeper level. Being young is much more different when you are older.

The article/research comes across, to me, as rather biased.
Quite an arrogant male putdown, imo.
I don't think much of "The Guardian", btw.

Perhaps masculine insecurity "Is a Thing", in part due to Political Correctness.
Men are uncertain what is and isn't acceptable in this changing social environment.

Not that I am in the dating game,
But things like gender diversity, pronouns required, outdated values being considered sexist.
Heaven help you if you offer to open a door for a woman, these days. Well, get a contract of consent first, and you are OK. 8O

Isn't it any wonder that many men's testicles are shrivelled raisins these days?

Personally, I think the article/research ignores the influence of the evolutionary process.
It ignores that for much of human history, people didn't live that long, compared to today,
And they had to get "A Wriggle On" early if they wanted to make a significant contribution to the population growth.

Social indoctrination suppresses human impulses/instincts,
But for most of us, the instincts are still there in the chains of social expectations.

Nietzsche brought this suppression, to our attention nicely.

Meh,
I'm not impressed with the presentation of the article,
And suspect the integrity of the interpretation of the findings.
I can't be bothered doing more research into the matter. 8)

This idiot author is basically saying that all men are pedophiles, preferring girls not older than 18. lol

IMO the author of the article is making assumptions that align with their agenda. But the scientific convention is that males are biologically programmed to mate with as many younger "reproductively mature females as possible,

However most males are educated to understand social, religious and cultural norms and can make the cognitive leap forward to not harass younger females. I say most because there will always be older men who will sleep with young women if the opportunity arises.

There will always be older and younger men who dig elegant, sophisticated, older women as well.

Agreed.

But my point is:
The "Instinct" is still there.
And, men are not responsible for what evolution has instilled.
They simply have to abide by the social standards of their respective communities.

If you read what I am saying as a license to do whatever they want, you are wrong.

They get upset when a 26 old dates a 19 year old
Or when a 21 old they know is dating a 26 old loser

Kate Beckinsale and Demi Moore obviously have no problem attracting younger men.

Yes and most younger women aren't interested in oldies unless they are very very rich
