Does anyone else have this problem?

Here's a problem I've run into before (more than once):

I think a woman shows clues of being into me. Then I turn out to be wrong.

I end up feeling like the world's biggest idiot.

Neurotypicals have a hard enough time reading clues of interest. Being on spectrum makes it ten thousand times harder.

The pure humiliation (and the idiocy feeling) of being wrong (about something where I was confident I was right) makes me never want to ask anyone out ever again.

I checked it out. You're right, if she's really into you, she'll make it obvious (even to those of us on the spectrum).

Here's where I take issue though (not with you; with the situation): There are cases where she'll make it less obvious (to us at least), yet probably obvious to a neurotypical. We end up missing out on those opportunities (because we fail to read the clues).

Well, our condition is the elephant in the room.

Oh wait… you ARE an elephant.

Oh, no. You’re not alone. I used to think this was the case a lot in high school. Now I’ve become more cynical, cautiously optimistic and have my guard up more.

I've been told I have the memory of an elephant . That's where my username comes from.

As for the topic of the thread, there's a female coworker I thought showed clues of being into me. Even a neurotypical guy I work with told me she's clearly into me. Come to find out, she's a lesbian (and has a girlfriend).

Which circles back to what I said about how even neurotypicals have a hard enough time reading clues of interest.

My junior and senior year of high school, there was a girl I spoke with quite a bit. She showed some pretty obvious clues of being into me.

Yet I never asked her out. You know why? Because every girl I expressed interest in during middle school, freshman year, and sophomore year wasn't into me. My self-esteem was way too shot.
