I often get called smart and I don't really agree with that. The only reason people think I'm smart is because, unlike most people, I choose to care about intellectual things and to educate myself. It seems most people refuse to do the same by fear of getting rejected by the group. I believe everybody is "smart", but that very few choose to cherish their intellects. So my question is, where do i find other people who care about their brains and are therefore "smart"? This is a serious issue for me. I have no one to talk to about things that interest me and i feel very lonely :(

The first thing that sprang to my mind was "TED - ideas worth spreading" (link).
This website is "crawling" with smart people young and old from all over the world engaging their intellect for the better of "the group", ,
As a member you can also take part in discussions on the website.

another one is edge.org (link)

oh - and there is always WP, .

My IQ is not high enough, so I can't be a member of Mensa. By "smart" people I mean people who have an interest in intellectual things, not necessarily people with high IQs.

The really smart people don't belong to any groups. Group thinking isn't smart. People that like to learn are usually strong mentally, so I go for tennis players. I like tennis, and it's a good way to meet people.

I have found intellectual and cultured people by becoming a member of the local Unitarian Universalist church. I also find intellectual people by volunteering, getting involved in groups, and by involving myself in civic matters. Intelligent discussion always seems to attract the intellects in the community.

I believe this was already mentioned, but MENSA would be the place to go. You can also join a group that relates to your special interest. You may have already done this. I also get frustrated when everyone around me is talking about their latest shoe purchase, but I find solace in more specialized and structured group activities.

oh, and about joining MENSA. You don't necessarily need the IQ. If you have standardized test scores in the 98th percentile, that should do the trick.
