Or, sometimes people really don't know what they're talking about, and it
really does render their opinion irrelevant. I don't know about this particular case, it seems to be purely a matter of opinion, but I wouldn't say that in general "you don't know what you're talking about" is an absurd statement or tactic if it is in fact true. Plenty of misinformation out there, and no shortage of people willing to form strong opinions on subjects which they know nothing about, and then refuse to budge from them when confronted with real facts or an actual expert.
