It seems that people have always been walking on me all my life; I almost always had to do something I didn't want to do because one of my peers forced me to do it, and I could never have just said "no". When I tried to have conversations with people, they seemed to hog the conversation, even when I started it. Does anyone have any tips on becoming more assertive without turning into a jerk?

Get rich.
The more money one has, the less people tell them they're jerks. (to their face)
So make money and everyone will think you're great!

You really can't compete with jerks without becoming one. You may want to seek out environments where the percentage of jerks might be lower such as churches or volunteer activities. While you will still find a large number of jerks, you may have better luck encountering an occasional person who is not so full of himself such that he might have a little room for you.

That's a tough question to answer. I'm a fairly assertive person, and I know I can't really give you a guidebook on exactly how to act because I don't know the nuance of it.
