Though most people are going to flame this guy, I'm going to agree with him. Aspergers is only ever described as a disorder or weakness because we are the minority. If we lived in opposite world where aspies were the majority, NT's would be seen as the ones with a 'disorder'.

Typically establishment and society see a disability as a disability. That does not mean people "with" a disability are negative things. It's about perspective. If one centers their lives on the notion of a disability label that is about just the negatives and believes it to be simply a kind of bigotry then I think the perspective is very wrong. There is this idea of conspiracy that at times comes up as if the boogie man N.T's are out to get "us". I think it's wrong headed and the wrong kind of advocacy approach.

That doesn't mean it isn't a disorder, it's just because that society is structured "for" NTs, as they are the majority. AS wouldn't be considered a disorder in that scenario as society would be structured "for" Aspies. But society isn't structured like that, so it's classified as a disorder as aspies can't function as well in an NT society.

Everything is disordered compared to perfection and the act of trying to make everything perfect is a disorder.

I know but what gives people the right to define you as a mental illness just because they happen to be in the majority?

It's viewed as a developmental disability. Mental illness is more prominent in the DD population then the mainstream but I'd argue that this may be the case because of exclusion. My job is to increase inclusion and I view mental well being a big part of quality of life.

Anyway I will give you an example. When I worked at the hospital I advocated using robot technology to help the severely disabled patients who were confined to wheelchairs. I was immediately attacked as a mentally ill dreamer and a social deviant. However right before I was fired I arranged a field trip to the veterans hospital which was actively engaged in robotic research for severely disabled soldiers. So suddenly I became Mr. Mainstream and was offered an additional 2 years of employment , a prestigious recognition award and pay raises. Then at the end of my 4 years of employment a Doctor decided that robotic technology could only help wounded combat soldiers and that this technology had no applications for Developmental Disabilities. So again I was denounced as a mentally ill deviant who was incompetent and who could not do his job.

Simply shows a potential insecurity toward someone that comes up with original ideas.
