He is getting exactly the response he wants. The best way to deal with this sort of individual is to totally ignore them, as if they do not exist, or to simply laugh at them, which in most cases, is all they merit.

You feed a stray, they come back. Same thing here. Even the slightest acknowledgment is a foothold for that type. As long as they think that someone, anyone might stick around and pay attention to them long enough for them to start attacking the person, they'll do just that. The bigger the reaction, the happier they get.

Only problem is, they want to be absolutely sure they have the "last" word. Still, as long as nobody acknowledges them in the first place, after a while they will give up. But like all net-based things, this place will have new users every day, another source of attention that won't be aware of the situation as it stands.

Threads such as the "Ignore Attention Whores" (ok, I took some liberties with my rendition of the title) one, while well-meaning, are nothing more than a trophy to some of these types. "I managed to have a sticky made because of my exploits!" ANY acknowledgement that they have bene disruptive will gratify their egos.

Getting banned, that's a huge victory. That's almost a mark of honor, a "kill" in the score count of a FPS online. More bans, happier miscreant.

The "good ones," there's no beating them. Ever. Not unless all access is prevented for them.

...used to be that type, a few years ago.
