It didn't affect the film for me, if anything it adds to the charm that the Coen brothers included a joke meant for themselves.
In The Big Lebowski, Steve Buscemi's character Donny is always being told to "shut the f**k up!" because his character wouldn't shut up in Fargo, which is another one of their inside jokes.
Peter Stormare is well worth looking up, he's one of my favourite actors.

I live in the general area. My home town was mentioned. I have been to brainerd a million times. That area is very nice. When I go somewhere far away, people catch my accent, and say something about fargo, and start talking north american swede. Personally I think it sounds like something that is more apt to happen in wisconsin. That is where the texas chainsaw massacre idea came from. And a whole lot of other craziness.

Makes no difference to me if it was either way, but I like to know that for a fact whether it was or not.

It was based on a true story, and everyone around here knew all about it. Very stupid crime. That one is right up there with robbing the local bank, making a plan to evade the cops by driving off road on a logging trail, and hiding in the woods. The trail had 3 exits. One of them was the one they entered on. Ooh, I forgot to mention. You can follow the tracks in the dirt. It was a fun local event for the 2 cops in the area, and the DNR. GENIUS!! !! !
