I'm trying to get ideas on new things to try to meet people, like events to go to or the like. I'm pretty much out of ideas. :/
Can anybody share what they have done in the past to get out into things?
When I was young my mother used to sign me up for all kinds of youth activities like cubs, camps, church choir, etc. Since one of my obsessions is airplanes, I joined Air Cadets as a teen. In school I was in the bowling team. After graduation I changed jobs quite a lot, but eventually got hired by a small software company that had already hired most of the geeks I knew in school. We got along OK because they were geeky anyway, so we spent a lot of time together outside of work going to pubs or coffee shops to talk about programming. I also eventually bought a motorcycle and joined a touring club that went tenting on weekends. During the summer a lot of motorcyclists like to hang out at the coffee shops to chat and show off, so I started doing that, too. I bought and sold several motorcycles, and eventually bought a "conversation starter" (ie: rare and exotic bike) and found that complete strangers (including non-bikers) would walk over to me and start asking questions about the bike.
For all of that socializing, though, I still lead a rather solitary life. The longest-lasting friendships have all started when I went to social gatherings, searched for the shyest person in the room and quietly said "hello"....
