Is it because the US is where you live and so you're loyal to your *pack*? Or is it that the US has been particularly good to you..... :?

I am not particularly patriotic, I just like saying things that piss off judgmental Europeans and East Coast Liberals.

America is far from perfect. But the reality is, neither is any other country.

We won the last two world wars
We are away from everything else with two huge oceans protecting us

1: Your conclusion is wrong. This is not the 1800's.
2: China and Japan invent and manufacture most stuff nowadays. On average, in the past, the USA has had no more inventors than anywhere else to my knowledge.
3 & 4: And? Toys can be obtained in any part of the world, courtesy of the internet, and wealth means nothing to those Americans who still are poor.
5: So do lots of other places. Brazil, for a start. And most of Europe (ta EU).
6: Yes, but you're beaten on this too. Sweden seems tobe the goody-two-shoes of the world when it comes to having the highest standards of everything.
7: No, you contributed. Helped. And the US help was welcome. But if all other countries had left you to it as soon as you turned up, would you still have won? Doubt it. You didn't win WW1 and WW2 single handed.
8: 911, anyone? And you're still stuck to Canada and Cenral/South America, so if they ever decide not to like you, you're in trouble. And Alaska's stupidly close to Russia.
9: Not everyone speaks your language (1/4 of the world's population speak English, decent number of those would have been taught in the UK, Australia, South Africa etc, so will have different dialects.) And the UK doesn't have to adapt to you. I have never had a gun pointed at my head for saying biscuit instead of cookie, or trousers instead of pants.
10: If you always get your way, how come Iraq aren't thanking you yet? And Vietnam? And Japan? And any country you've ever been at war with? And why hasn't terrorism stopped yet. You don't want it to continue, so why haven't all terrorists apologised and given themselves up?
If this is getting your own way then I'm the Queen of Sheba.
11: People might like America more if certain Americans stopped bragging and acting like they were better than everyone else, letting the rest of their country down in the process.

Bet it just irks you so much that your computer and the internet was invented in the US, eh?

And only the US is able to provide high school dropouts the chance to climb up to become a medical doctor, at least theoretically.

The Internet was an American invention, I agree to that, but the computer was actually in 1941 by Konrad Zuse. In Nazi Germany, nonetheless! You're using a Nazi tool, man.

Well, I guess maybe that depends on your definition of computer. None electronic computers were invented before electricity. But I think the thing we think of as a computer today was invented in the United States, as well as the operating systems, and most of the search engines, the internet, the LCD screens, the QWERTY keyboard, and most of the communication is done in American English (as opposed to British English which a bit different).

Such questions are not easy to answer: Zuse build the first programmable computer, the theory is based on Alan Turning's text "On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem" of 1936, which reflects theoretical discussion of his time in mathematics in respect of Goedel and Hilbert. A discussion which can be traced back to Leibniz and Blaise Pascal. The first electronic computer (without relays switches) is an American invention.

There is no single inventor of the "computer".

---

We could through your list and show how each invention is the result of a long list of inventions, leading finally to modern products.

---

BTW: The LCD-Screen has been patented by Hoffmann-LaRoche in 1970, the production of liquid crystals for LCD-screens is almost a monopole of BASF, Ludwigshafen.

American's like to take credit for everything. But most of the time, they've just copied other ideas.

Americans, mostly immigrants from other countries, invented things not because they are better or smarter, but because we have a government and economic system that allows ideas and inventions to flourish.

I think there are other reasons:

1) The cost of war: Europe's history till 1945 is a history of wars. See the resources the Thirty Years' War drained from all countries and the devastation it causes in Central Europe (there are regions in which you find hardly a building prior 1650), the costs of the wars following the French Revolution till 1813/15 (which brought the UK near a state bankruptcy) - and the devastation of two world wars. Only to name the really big ones. Other, "smaller" ones ruined whole regions, like War of the Palatine Succession - which is in the mind of the people of this region even after more than 300 years still present (the devastation was horrible in Palatine).

2) The absence of a uniformed market without border controls, a unified currency and measurements. The extra costs of such an fragmented market are obvious.

3) Political instability: Alone France changed between 1789 and 1871 ten times it's regime. The lack of political stability does not allow to make real long term planning and each regime change has potential costs.

This negative factors are since 1951/57 no longer present and it is interesting to see haw this old continent developed a wealth for the masses never seen before in history.
