Plug my ears. Retreat to a tolerable distance. END whatever's making the noise.

I hate the sound of our dog barking, I can't stand it and it makes me pretty agressive. Therefore I try to undo my mother's pampering and spoiling of it and get the dog to listen. If I want to get around that noise I turn up the volume of my music, and as I like (besides classical music) black and death metal that has a great effect and I won't hear the dog anymore.

I always take my iPod wherever I go. Therefore, I'm usually listening to music that muffles the noise. Also, if I'm able to, I turn off, or stop whatever is causing the noise. Move to someplace where it's tolerable. If I'm not able to do any of this, I become pretty cranky, and may get irate.

I try to think about different things (NOT the sound).

Just try to remember some of your peaceful memories or if you have some stuff to use (a mobile phone, a notebook and a pen, a book, a watch, stuff in your wallet etc.) try to do something with what you have at those moments

Differs in different situations:

1. http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^eb^PLUG
2. Earplugs - when music is not an option.
3. Going away from the source of the noise.
4. Telling the source of the noise to "lower it".

For some reason I suddenly like soccer and I cant stand the sound of those stupid horns they are blowing during the World Cup so I mute the TV.
I also cant stand dog barking. I have one dog that barks all the time when he is outside so I only let him out to go potty and then let him back in. Thankfully my Mom is taking him when I move to France.
My neighbors play music that bothers me so I put my earphones in. I think my IPod is sometimes my saving grace.

The earphones from Koss are my favourite! They muffle enough noise even without music. Those and earplugs helped me a lot.

I make the noise stop or get away from it. When trying to sleep I wear foam ear plugs.

I-pods, ear plugs, whatever you feel comfortable putting in or over your ears works. I personally use ear-plugs because if i have music playing, i'll be completely oblivious to my surroundings.

i have a big ol' noisy box fan that makes quite a dense mix of noise which effectively masks all but the loudest booms from the neighbors.

If I can get away from the offending noise, I do it as quickly as I can. I also do my best to use white noise to lessen the impact of unwanted exterior sounds when I'm at home. The mute button has become my best friend while watching tv, or even sometimes videos online. I don't like the sound of wailing guitars. I find it obnoxious & distracting, not to mention painful. I've noticed that a lot of shows I do like have this bad habit of playing heavy metal guitars during the programs. It's getting so I'll probably have to give up watching them.

the worst place for noise for me are trains. So there I have noise canceling earphones, music from my iPod (I prefer silence, but the music drowns the more offensive noise around me).

On top of my earphones I then where earmuffs - big industrial ones just like airport personnel have. I look weird like this, but no one cares because no one notices!! !
