I have long been interested in radio, and today, nearly 26 years after I got my first shortwave radio at age 12, I'm a licensed Technician, the first amateur radio license level. I plan to take the General (level two) exam in a month or two. The thing is, I don't know what to do now. I got a complimentary free membership in an amateur radio club, but it's located in a suburb about 30 miles from where I live, I live in a poor area of Sacramento and there aren't any clubs here. I plan to get a cheap Chinese made 2m/70cm handheld off Ebay, but that only reaches to the nearby repeater, and I don't know if there's any repeaters where I live. Also, I'm shy and don't make friends easily, in fact I have no friends right now. This may be less of a problem when I get to General, since then I will have access to shortwave. Any other active amateur radio aspies here?

Always had a fascination for SW radio and would love to obtain an operators license. I don't what to tell you about getting a more powerful radio but just look around for a deal.

Congrats on becoming an amateur radio technician. I have no understanding of amateur radio so can't advise you on wha tto do, other than to check out the club you got a membership for once to just see how it is.

Grats!

I work mostly 2m in the Los Angeles area, and just acquired some gear for 80m to 10m operation. Now all I need is to sneak a few dipoles and a longwire up onto the roof without the XYL/YF finding out...

Well done.
I'm planning on taking the exam for the Foundation license (the UK equivalent) at some stage in the future and when transport permits as the nearest radio clubs are only accessible by car. Maybe one day we'll catch each other on air, who knows.

Well, I did some research and it turns out that there are a number of repeaters around here. There's a club, the North Hills Radio Club, that covers all of Sacramento north of the American River (the river that cuts Sacramento County into north and south). I am studying for my General right now and intend to take the test on Sept 15. I am more interested in HF anyway.
