I'm still shaking after what happened. After years of all the emotional crap they've given me, I've gone and hurled it back in their face. I know it was terrible thing that I've done, but it's something I believe I should have done 7 years ago.

I punched my father once after he took his badgering of me too far at exactly the wrong time.
I don't hate him, though.

In the past, I used to be an emotional pushover, mostly with my parents. It wasn't till I blew up at my mom when I was lower than a teen that I started being more confrontational, sarcastic, more willing to take less crap from anyone. So, whoever hated me was about to find how much I hated them back. But it all really started when I stood up to mom for being overbearing in my youth.

You didn't do a terrible thing at all! You grew some balls and stood up for yourself and made it clear you weren't taking it anymore. Good for you! It gets easier as time goes by and because it's easier, you don't always wait until you are at the point of exploding.

You took the first step. I'm proud of you!

Yes. Several of them in fact. Pig headed know it alls are the worst, but the best way to deal with negative nasty people is to completely ignore their sorry ---es. The best way to kill something is to ignore it, remove all attention. Especially important to ignore pathetic people who are pig headed know it alls who think they know all about you: they're clueless idiots who can't even analyze their own thought processes, nor have the awareness to see beyond their closed minded selves.

Good for you. Sometimes, with a truly toxic person, it's really necessary to stand up to them. (And then perhaps, if you can, keep your distance, because taking a stand usually doesn't make them any nicer - if they had that degree of insight into their own behaviour, they wouldn't be douches in the first place.)

Wish I'd had the courage to do this with my late mother.

I once did the same thing to my mom, but that was when I was 14, maybe 15. My sister then grounded me for a week; I wasn't even allowed to go to school.

Unfortunately no. I've seen some of my former bullies out and about and had pretty good chances to tell them off, but they all looked so pathetic that I couldn't do anything other than feel totally vindicated. One of my former male bullies eye-humped the crap out of me and I laughed all the way home. I saw one girl bully recently and she looked all used up and dumpy and sad and my insides were all, "MWAHAHAHAHA! Look how gross you turned out."

No. You have done nothing wrong... People should be afforded the same level of respect they give you. If they pushed you to the breaking point, then telling them about it is acceptable behavior...

It takes bravery to do that and a purity of soul to feel bad about it... I applaud you... I guaranty I would have been less gentle

It was an awful thing to say, to the point that I cannot repeat it here. And the person I said it to was a parent. Mostly I'm reminded of God's law to respect one's parents.

After a lot of emotional processing over the last few days, it boiled down to two feelings: anger at them and guilt in myself.

Short of kicking someone in the nuts, I have stood up to my enemies in every way I have wanted to. I'm to crazy for inhibitions. I've even thrown shoes at people who were mean to me.

I've never hated anyone and violence isn't in my genes.

FWIW, I don't know if you are Christian or not, but Christian psychologist Dr. Henry Cloud talks about setting proper boundaries in a family among other situations. Parents of adult children often cross them and need to be put in their place. You can respect a person without validating their rotten behaviors. :D
