If everyone knew all about you and you didn’t know them, if you were infamous how would you feel?

I'd feel a lot better than I do now. I wouldn't have to justify that I'm trans or on the spectrum.

If one person knew me even 50%, I might be able to answer.

Am unable to answer that question since I can't even begin to relate to being infamous ...

Quote:
from The Century Dictionary.
Of ill fame; famous or noted for badness of any kind; notoriously evil; of vile character or quality; odious; detestable: applied to persons or things.
Involving or attributing infamy; branded, or that brands, with infamy: as, an infamous crime;

Quote:
from the GNU version of the Collaborative International Dictionary of English.
adjective Of very bad report; having a reputation of the worst kind; held in abhorrence; guilty of something that exposes to infamy; base; notoriously vile; detestable
adjective Causing or producing infamy; deserving detestation; scandalous to the last degree
adjective (Law) Branded with infamy by conviction of a crime.
adjective Having a bad name as being the place where an odious crime was committed, or as being associated with something detestable; hence, unlucky; perilous; dangerous.

I think I'll wait for clarification - does the OP really mean "infamous" ?

The first thing the topic title brought to my mind was how back in elementary school everyone seemed to know who I was, but I only knew my own class and some people from one class above and one below me... maybe I was the odd one out simply because of my prosopagnosia, which I knew nothing of at the time, and everyone else really did know everyone at least by name... it was a small school, so it's possible.

As for everyone knowing a lot about me because I was famous, I think I could live with that since then I'd know why they know so much about me even though I know nothing about them.

For better or for worse.

It greatly depends on what I did or did not do to get to that form of recognition by others.

That would include the "inaction" of being the victim of malicious gossip.

Thanks. I'm still struggling to know quite what the question is, but I'll have a go at making a reply.

I don't think I'd like to be famous, because generally speaking I'm not fond of famous people, so I think I'd rather dislike myself. I object to the inequality of fame, I'd prefer a world in which we were all pretty much equally known and understood. And I don't think famous people are often known very accurately.

But on reflection, I suspect that what you're wanting to know is how people here would feel if everybody else understood them. Personally I'd prefer it to be mutual. And I don't think I'd like it if I couldn't conceal at least some of myself from others. The idea of them knowing all about me and me knowing nothing about them, I'd feel like I was a zoo animal or something. I wouldn't want to trust strangers with all that information about me.

I would set up a GoFundMe account for myself and ask everyone to donate a dollar.

I mean....really.....this "autism as leprosy" thing is just ridiculous.

How would one be "infamous" for having autism????

The first time Feynman fielded a 'phone call from a reporter, he was surprised to hear his roommate respond "Ah, publicity's a b***h."
I have been mildly celebrated in my field, and out of over a dozen interviews, was only quoted with full accuracy once. Keeping up with feeding the media can be a lot of work and it may be a waste of time. Fame can easily create a public persona that sells ads but has little to do with the real you, just cherry-picking what it can use.
"Whenever two people meet, six people are present. Each person as they see themselves, each person as they see each other, and each person as they really are."
