You can't ban hate speech, any more than you can ban unamerican speech.

Because you will need someone, or something, to define what is hate speech, just as you'd need something to define what is and isn't unamerican speech, something like a commission of unamerican activities.

And then you have made yourselves a king and hate speech becomes "Any speech that king dislikes" and free speech becomes "Any speech that flatters that King" which is basically another way to say you have no speech at all.
You now say what you are told to, or else.

In order to speak freely one must risk being offensive and being offended.

you're either gonna have what michigan is trying to do, or the existing cancel culture. the left [and right] will not lie down and play dead.

I worry how the right-wingers in MI will respond.

They were willing to kidnap Whitmer over the Covid restrictions, I worry what they might try to do this time.

That said, if it becomes law, a set of guidelines with examples of what is or isn't acceptable should be ready available to the public to help prevent any confusion that may arise.

The bill is about "actions" not "words" so it is about hate crimes not hate speech.

It would make "gender identity" a protected class. A protected class is about discrimination which is an action, not words.
