Moment seven officers drag 'autistic' girl, 16, kicking and screaming from Leeds home for committing a 'hate crime' after she told female cop 'you look like my lesbian nana'
A police force has been accused of heavy handedness after a teenage girl with autism was detained by seven cops after 'saying a female officer looked like her nana, who is a lesbian'.
The 16-year-old, who also suffers from scoliosis, had been driven to her home in Leeds, West Yorkshire, by officers after midnight when she allegedly made the comment.
She was later dragged away screaming in the early hours of Monday morning over the 'homophobic public order offence'.

She totally does though...

West Yorkshire Police are often a massive disappointment. Not surprising at all honestly.
I've been sat here for nearly 2 years on a court case with them and they are so overwhelmed they don't know their arse from their elbow.
Greater Manchester Police have been in the news recently as well for raping that Asian woman, I worked for them once years ago so I'm really not surprised. They are like a hierarchy Mafia.
Sigh.

If the police officers can't handle a comment like that, why are they in the police force? I thought they dealt with hardened criminals, I'm sure they say and do worse things!
I would just laugh if someone said that to me.
Get a grip, police!

have understood hate laws have gotten to a exaggerated point about not using their common sense inthe UK about judging hate crime verbiage with just anybody. ( NEW FOUND POWER). to make the police officiers feel more official?

Loves velcro,

Something like that. It's often the officers with some kind of ego issue though.
They've basically just tried to make an example out of someone so regular people don't say anything to them in future but it's backfired because she was a vulnerable child.

I bet this would not have happened if the girl was a 6 foot tall, muscly man.
Compare the response of the Metropolitan police to the female-attended vigil for the death of Sarah Everard, to their response to a large group of violent male football fans.
Bullies pick on the most defenceless.

No, they'd taze the s**t out of that person along with doing all the rest of what was done.

So...a straight woman was insulted to be told that she looked a [another person who happened to be]lesbian, so the cops arrested the person who made the comparison...for perping a hate crime...against lesbians? The lady cop is the one insulted by being compared to a lesbian...so...isnt SHE the person being homophobic?

No they would have ignored the comment. They might taze him for other things but not for a stupid comment like that.

Exactly right! I hadn't thought of that! They are doing mental gymnastics to blame the girl.

’No further action’ against autistic girl arrested over ‘lesbian nanna’ comment, police say
The statement confirmed that officers had concluded the criminal investigation and that the 16-year-old was released from her bail. The family has also been updated.
Oz Khan, assistant chief constable at West Yorkshire Police, sad: “We recognise the significant level of public concern that this incident has generated, and we have moved swiftly to fully review the evidence in the criminal investigation.
“We do appreciate the understandable sensitivities around incidents involving young people and neurodiversity and we are genuinely committed to developing how we respond to these often very challenging situations.”
Khan added that a review by the station’s Professional Standard Directorate remains ongoing, but added that West Yorkshire Police would “take on board any lessons to be learned from this incident”.
On Friday, The Mirror reported that police were currently dealing with a complaint from the girl’s mother and urged people to “avoid reaching conclusions solely on the basis of the social media video”.
The National Autistic Society (NAS) has since urged the government to enforce mandatory police training to help officers understand the needs of neurodivergent individuals.
“While we can’t comment on the specifics of this case, as we don’t know all the details, autistic people can find communicating difficult and can become extremely anxious in situations they don’t understand,” Tim Nicholls, the NAS head of influencing and research, said.
“It’s essential that police officers understand autism, and that specialist support is available when needed.
“We’ve been calling for mandatory training for police officers for years, and strongly believe the government should make this happen.”

Ding ding ding we have a winner!
To say 'you look like someone I know who is a lesbian' is merely an observational statement. There was no homophobic sentiment. Instead, the cop is the one who assumed it was an insult.
Quite simply, this was an abuse of power by the police. You could argue that the statement implied insult, that the sixteen year old meant that it was a bad thing that the cop looked like her nan. Yet she doesn't actually state how she feels about the appearance of her nan, therefore it is reasonable to assume that the sixteen year old was just making small talk.
Frankly, this isn't even a matter of autism awareness. This is a matter of common sense. By jumping to conclusions in this manner, the cop is the one being homophobic.
I've experienced homophobia before and let me tell ya, this isn't it.

Opinions=mine:
Because the 16 year old is Autistic she was being literal not making a homophobic insinuation. Of course Autistics can be homophobes but sans evidence of homophobia from the girl I am not going make a negative assumption.
In this instance the cops were bullies but they were given a weapon by the state in the form of hate speech laws. Luckily for the girl “common sense” prevailed and the police backed down because of public outrage. This is a hopeful sign for U.K. that “wokeness” will be allowed to go only so far.

The word Woke was originally a part of AAVE and it meant to be aware of racial inequality and issues - to be awake to the reality. However, it has since become a catch-all insult and I think that it's a shame that it will never go back to its original meaning. Hence why I never use the word. It means everything therefore it means nothing.
Even if such hate crime laws didn't exist, I highly suspect that the police officer would've found another reason to abuse her power like she did. Provoking an officer, perhaps. She used the law, even though what the girl said was not in violation of said laws.
I think that being out comes with an element of risk. You're likely going to experience homophobia in some form or another. However, when it strays into threats of violence (or outright violence) that's when it goes too far. Or refusal of service (i.e refusing to treat a gay patient, or refusing to serve them at a restaurant on that basis). It is usually best to assume ignorance unless it is explicit.

Originally “woke” meant more then being aware of racism but being hyper aware so you can see subtle forms of racism most others can not see. I have posted about the current meaning and ongoing controversies about what the term means elsewhere but instead of derailing another thread I am going to limit it to this incident.
Most here are thinking the cop had one of two motivations
1. The cop felt personally offended viewing “lesbian” as a slur because she is homophobic.
2. The girl using “lesbian nanna” was a cause belli for the officer to be sadistic.
I propose another possible motive. She did really think the girl is homophobic because she is so hyper aware she saw racism that did not exist and had a law on the books that pushed her further into that “woke” way of thinking.

I don't have much in the way of interaction with the police but when I do, I find them mostly OK but this is Gwent police though. I don't think there have been any reported incidents like the one in this thread with Gwent police at least.
As for the officers in this thread.....what a bunch of buffoons. That officer will be harassed constantly now and rightly so.
