The article cited by OP suggests to me I should try to use definable criteria so I went with:
1. Movies in our collection that I choose to mention here
2. Which Maltin's Guide gives four stars or have no Maltin rating
3. Currently with an 8+ IMDb rating

I'd add:
2001: A Space Odyssey [1968]
Interstellar [2014]
Jaws [1975]
Koyaanisqatsi [1982]
M [1931]
The Wizard of Oz [1939]

I'd Add:

The Sting

Vertigo

An Inconvenient Truth

Waiting for Superman

Saving Private Ryan

The Birds

American Splendor

28 Days Later

The King's Speech

Logan

Unbreakable

Zodiac

Toy Story 3

I like the fact that Mary Poppins made it on the list. It's one of my favourite movies.

I think Shutter Island is a better movie than some of the ones on the list.

I saw a bit of Pinocchio once, on a "coming soon" thing on a VCR tape.
It looked scary af.
Same with Sleeping Beauty - I saw that one but it scared me to high heavens.

Where's It's a Wonderful Life?

It's the most "perfect" movie ever made imo.

The Czechoslovakian version is quite charming.

Edit: D'oh! I somehow got Sleeping Beauty mixed up with Cinderella.

Anyway, the Czech version of Cinderella is very nice.

In addition to the six I previously recommended be added I thought I'd try expanding my criteria to include movies with an IMDb rating that suggests the Maltin rating perhaps should have been higher:
1. Movies in our collection that I choose to mention here
2. Which Maltin's Guide gives four three-and-half stars or have no Maltin rating
3. Currently with an 8.2+ IMDb rating with at least 750K votes

With these revised criteria I would also add these nine:
Aliens [1986]
A Clockwork Orange [1971]
Jurassic Park [1993]
Kill Bill Volume 1 [2003]
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King [2003]
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers [2002]
Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope [1977]
Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi [1983]
Up [2009]

While it might not fit the criteria mentioned in my previous posts, I have to add one more movie:

WALL·E [2008]
<=>"In Space, No One Can Hear You Clean"

Excellent animated science fiction suitable for any age audience.

Magnificent! Not having it listed here bothered me immensely.
