To get my first job out of college, I had to move out of state to a big city. It was a lousy job, but it was my first. That is what comes of not knowing anybody and having no connections. Point being, you may have to widen your geographical search.
Another tactic, very ambitious for an aspie, would be go to events where you know important people from the company might be...and get to know them somehow. That's what the higher level NTs do... I never tried it but hey. There is always a first, right?
I agree, nothing can replace getting out there and meeting people face to face.
From my experience online applications rarely get looked at seriously. Plus with key word searching algorithms, your resume and cover letter may get missed because you maybe used a different terminology.
If you plan on doing the old pound the pavement method, I would suggest calling and/or looking online to find out who the hiring manager or department manager of the perspective companies you are interested in applying to.
I world try my best to circumvent the HR department and go straight to the operations manager or shift supervisor. This is for a couple of reasons, the first one is that you want to talk directly to your potential boss in hopes that you can get an interview on the spot, and the second one is that HR usually knows nothing about the position that they are hiring for and most importantly what to look for in a potential employee. This is especially true in male dominated fields like the Trades and STEM. I have never once gotten a job from interviewing with HR, it is always after talking to a boss who has done real field work that I get hired.
