I don't know if this is just me, or if it's another part of AS, but I have a difficult time crossing roads.

The reason is, there's so much going on, in so many different directions, that I can't process it all and either end up running across too early and having cars beep and screech to a halt to avoid hitting me, or I become too scared to cross and miss chances when the road is clear. It's harder for me if I'm crossing a road with a lot of parked cars.

I try to use traffic light crossing/zebra crossings as often as I can but even then, I'm constantly on the look out for cars, and often, I'll see a car coming in the distance, far enough away for me to cross slowly and safely, but I'll get really uneasy and walk faster, or, I sometimes think a car's turning and end up running the rest of the way across the road when it wasn't turning at all. There are a few places where I live that don't have any real form of pedestrian crossing dispite the fact that they're pretty major, dangerous roads so sometimes I have to cross on my own judgement, which is hard.

Sometimes I also get distracted. I remember walking home from college once with about 3-4 friends. We stopped at a traffic light and were waiting for the bell to go off signalling it was okay to cross, but for some reason, while I was waiting for the bell, I looked up and started looking at the all buildings' roofs ( I live in a city, so there's plenty of things to get distracted by). I wasn't even paying attention to the conversation at this point. A few seconds later I snapped out of my daze and saw my friends on the other side of the road waiting for me. Without a second thought, I immediately ran across and the next thing I know I've got my hand on the bonnet of a car, and my legs are running to the left, trying to avoid being hit. I think it was only the guy in the car's quick reflexes that stopped me getting hit and probably quite badly injured. If he would have hit me at the crossing, I would probably have been half way under his car.

Today, I've got a careers meeting at a college and there's a very busy cross roads that I have to cross. Although there's pedestrian crossings, I'm still nervous about going there today just because I've got to cross this road. ]

What makes it harder is that usually, in populated areas, there's always a big group of people waiting to cross, but sometimes, some of those people get impatient and walk across too early, when it's unsafe. This throws me off because I assume I've not heard the bell and start walking with them, only to find myself in the middle of a busy road with cars beeping and me running for my life feeling like an idiot because everyone's beeping at me.

So, does anyone else ever get distracted or overwhelemed by roads and the amount of traffic? Or is it just me?

that happens to me too! lol People tell me i act like high people because apparently high people get very nervous when crossing streets with alot of cars too.... my friends always tell me "if the car hits you, you could always sue him..." but for some reason that logic doesnt help, it just makes it worse....

I actually do have a problem like that when involving two very large, busy streets and no lights. People often act upon instinct on this area which you just can't trust. They're such large busy streets too... cars coming from everywhere all of the time

I have trouble with road crossing and with navigating around car-parks where there are not separate walkways.

I have this problem too and what pandd said about navigating through car parks.

I get really nervous about crossing roads because of the cars coming in every direction. All I do is walk too.

The other week - I got my hand hurt pressing the button to cross the road cause at the same time I pressed it my daughter decided to, too with her foot

I can definitely relate to this. I am so bad that half my friends actually hold my hand and cross me across the road because they don't trust me to cross safely by myself. My mum is constantly telling me how afraid she is that I will get hit by a car when crossing, because I forget to look to either side of the road (generally when I'm in a conversation with someone).

I'm the same exact way. I get terrified of crossing the street. Even if it's empty, I'm still afraid that a car is going to come out of no where & hit me. I don't have a car, so I get around by walking & taking buses. I have to walk across streets just to get to the buses. The street is really wierd with this V shape in the middle, so there's traffic coming from five directions. It's so confusing & hard to keep track of. I get distracted by the cars & then start to get overwhelmed because I spend too much time looking at one particular lane, or one particular car, & then I pay no attention to the rest. What I end up having to do is just take a quick look, & then keep my head down, & cross as fast as I can. It's not safe, but otherwise, I'd be standing on the corner, or side of the road, for hours.
Crosswalks are the worst, & I try to avoid them. I know that they were put there to protect people, but I feel I'm in even more danger there than anywhere else.

Another thing I hate is when people wave me on to try to get me to cross. It just sends me into a panic.

he only problem I hve with this is being extra cautious. I tend to miss some opportunities because I want a good one. Although I do J walk everyday at this one by my university, but the spot I do it at is very easy to even when its busy.

Yes! I have a very hard time crossing streets. It doesn't improve when I'm driving either. I still have a difficult time with timing and distance and the distractions. Its one of the things other have found so "odd" about me. My inability to cross a street.

 that's almost good advice, but what if it kills you?

My mum used to try to hold my hand when we crossed roads, too, but I'm 20 now so I get kind of embarrassed, so now she just grabs hold of my coat or arm and takes me across because if she doesn't, I'll still be standing on the pavement dreaming or staring at something, while everyone else is walking across.

I don't drive, but a lot of that is to do with the fact that I'm scared to. I mean, I can't cross the road properly, imagine what I'd be like behind the wheel of a car, especially at roundabouts. I get confused at roundabouts as a passenger, so I'd probably get stuck at one if I was driving. Driving seems very complicated. Not the actual driving of the vehicle, just all the signs, signals, cars, pedestrians, unexpected roadworks or closed roads you've got to follow. Several times when I've been in taxis, we've come across an unexpected detour or closed road. I'd probably panic in a situation like that. I can't follow directions for the life of me and unexpected things make me nervous.

Yeah, I do have such difficulties. But what to do... independent adults need to cross streets all the time.

I cannot judge speeds and the distance of moving objects all too well. And I also perceive so much things that the time I need to sort through them is taking too long if I cannot be sure that my judgement of distance and speed is the least accurate. At very rare times, my attention is so scattered that I cannot help gut forget about traffic after no more than 1 second for 2.

Yes, but that's only cos the Main Street in my village is the Devil's creation, everyone in the village hates it. Cars are speeding up and down it, not indicating, and to make things worse there's a massive corner so you can't see what's coming. A kid my brother used to be friends with got hit by a car there last year, he flew right over the top of the car, including his bike, and the stitches from his surgery the month before were loosened. Blood everywhere, ambulances and police all over our end of the village. Luckily the kid was ok.

I am like that often. At the crosswalk at my university that I always use, I will notice the cars have stopped for the light before I notice the white man on the light telling me to cross. I am often to busy thinking to bother with it, plus at that crosswalk, I watch the cars because it is easy to jay walk there.
