I've been alone for many years and basically by choice as well. Only recently in life have I discovered the autism spectrum and that I might be on it. Long story short: as I've been able to make more sense of things I've found that I'm now at least considering what possible futures that don't involv...

My routines don't cover every moment of everyday and I prefer to be spontaneous at other times. But, I long ago accepted the utility of routine. I can be a bit slow to figure things out, and I can be a bit ditsy. Routine is a good coping mechanism for both. Routine frees me from having to re-figure ...

Managing the depression and anxiety are certainly the more difficult issues for me. But it's occurred to me recently that a lack of passion might trump everything else. If I had a compelling vision to focus on, I'd at least be able to use that compulsion to distract myself from that other stuff.

I have many reasons....although today I've been posting quite a bit. * I'm afraid of saying something dumb * I can't organize my thoughts or have too many thoughts * I'm afraid of hurting someone's feelings * I can't think of anything to say Basically this. I have found that some reasons dominate i...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Do you get anxiety and what would you describe it as?

My anxiety is at its worst when I'm interacting or about to interact with someone I care about. I become fixated on anticipating how my lack of emotional or social awareness will disappoint or upset them in some way. I realize that this sort of thing probably got its start as the result of some unfo...

Any functional programming language. In college, it was lambda calculus and Standard ML. Nowadays, it's XSL. I find programming in these languages frustrating yet compelling - like solving some great puzzle.

As far as growing out of it, that's not something that will happen to me. As I grow older, the difference in how old I am emotionally becomes more apparant. I am 37 but emotionally I think I am in my 20s. This is my situation exactly (well, +9 months ). My emotional development seems to have ...

How realistic would it be to get a quieter keyboard? (You should be able to just plug in a USB keyboard to the laptop and it should just work.) Here's a $15 keyboard with some reviews claiming that it's relatively quiet:

Not sure if this counts, but I sometimes think of myself in the third person and first person at the same time. I do this to debate myself. I find I'm always switching sides only to find that other me playing devil's advocate in response. My thoughts tend to trail off before there's a clear winner, ...

I immediately understood both of your statements. All too frequently, I make mistakes with word choice. I know this because I'll figure it out moments after I finish speaking. I've found that most people, most of the time figure out what I meant or at least come close. There is one guy I know that h...

I noticed early on in life that I had a rather blank look in photos compared to others. After some practice I've since memorized a smile that looks rather convincing (to me, at least).

I don't understand at all - I read the Wikipedia entry and I don't get it. But I desperately need anything that might help me reduce the effect of sound on me. Could somebody explain (I know you did, but maybe try in baby words or something?) Are there exercises I could do? As it is, I use earplugs...

If I understand what I've read and what you mean, I believe that I can. It's hard to describe but if I do it, it makes a wierd thundery noise which can make loud sounds quieter. Is this what you mean? Yes! That's it exactly! The noise from the quivering muscles isn't uncomfortably loud. And it's th...

I usually speak in a quite monotone. Sometimes I think that freaks me out more than it does other people. But then again, I'm not good at reading people so who knows... I have found that I 'emote' more when giving a prepared speech, but that's because I actually practice it.

So I'm learning about 'quirks' associated with AS. I've got the usuals: can't small talk, can't 'read' people, clumsy, prefer routine, etc. One other quirk I have is I can flex my tensor tympani muscles at will. (Wikipedia has a page on the Tensor Tympani, but I can post links 'cause I'm new...) Thi...
