I see you are in the US like me. I think whether you go to your PCP first depends a lot on your insurance if you have it. I am going in for my Asperger's evaluation today and I never spoke with my PCP about it. My insurance allows self-referal for "mental health", so I just picked a psychiatrist ne...

I'm pretty new to AS and ASD. I know that AS is part of ASD, but I've also noticed that there are some people out there who get quite upset when someone with AS calls themselves autistic. I'm not sure what to think of that. Are a lot of people offended by that?

Yes, I have this to some degree. I do fine recognizing people within a context. For example, if I see the same cashier at the grocery store when I go shopping, I will recognize them. But, if I meet that same cashier somewhere else, like at the bank, I will have no idea who they are. I will know that...

I enjoyed my childhood as well. I used to think I didn't have a normal one or a happy one but I realize I did because I was fed and taken care of, I had friends despite the rejections and the meanness, I played, I was lucky to have understanding parents who wanted to help me get better. I enjoyed l...

I am overly critical, I admit. I think it stems from routine for me. I have a set way that I think something should be done, and I tend to criticize those who do it differently than I would. I do not handle criticism from others very well though. Probably for the same reason, because I usually feel ...

Yes and suspected AS. I had a very hard time dealing with my mom, and that was extremely stressful for me. But outside of that, I enjoyed my childhood. There was a small group of kids that ganged up on me for a few years, but it was fairly tolerable because I had a larger group of kids that accepted...

The common diagnosis of Asperger's predates some of us parents, including me. Many parents are diagnosed because their children were diagnosed first. Anyhow, whether to have children or not is a very personal decision, as it should be. Saying that people with X condition shouldn't have kids is leani...

I think I can pin my issue back to watching a movie called "The Velveteen Rabbit" in kindergarten, a little boy has a favorite stuffed rabbit, he grows up and adds other animals to his collection, and then one day he's almost a man and all the toys get tossed out in the trash. What a crappy thing t...

I have some pretty goofy expressions in my childhood pictures. In school pictures I was always told to smile, but I didn't like to because it felt odd and awkward and I felt that I looked ridiculous smiling, so I didn't want to. So my school pictures are full of half smiles or weird smirks. Not sure...

Yes, I do this too. As a kid I would worry about dolls/stuffed animals suffocating in the toy box. And I had one stuffed animal whose felt eye kept falling off. It seriously disturbed me that he was blind and in pain. I couldn't bare to read books like the Velvatine Rabbit or the Corduroy Bear becau...

I wonder if/how people's opinion on a "cure" changes over the years. My evaluation is next week, and I think if I do indded have AS (as I suspect I do), my desire for a cure might be rather strong because all I see are the negatives and not the positives. Probably doesn't help that a lot of books I ...

I vote research into a cause, especially genes involved. But that is probably because I work in science and I really appreciate quantitative over qualitative data. As a fellow scientist, I am much more in favor of looking at how symptoms come about, due to the fact that neuroscience IS quantitative...

I have no profound words of advice, but just wanted to let you know that I'm just as conflicted as you. I don't do well with ambiguity. I appreciate, heck, I need, definitive answers. And I think that is about 95% of why I scheduled an evaluation. As it gets closer though, I keep wondering if I shou...

I think I have AS, but I don't know for sure. My evaluation is in about two weeks. I don't have any family members that I can think of that have symptoms. Clinical depression runs rampant in my family, but that is about it. I do see some traits in my daughter. But she is still so young. For all I kn...
