You're not alone: I Pity Inanimate Objects by Godley & Creme I pity inanimate objects Because they can't move From specks of dust to paperweights Or a pound note sealed in resin Plastic Santas in perpetual underwater snowstorms Sculptures that appear to be moving But aren't I feel sorry for them...

FWIW, I don't put much trust in labels. If someone tells me they're Muslim or Christian or even non-religious or atheist, it tells me nothing about them except what they profess to believe. I need to know someone's character-- and that can only be gleaned by interacting and watching how they are wit...

This is only tangentially related, but when I was a young boy (this was in the mid to tale '60s) I had to sleep with something smooth in my hand. I would always take an object (it was different every night) and say, "Mom, is this smooth?" Not sure why I didn't think I could work out for my...

I would never recommend anyone go off their medication or make any changes without a doctor's say-so. That said, if his issues aren't resolved (or are made worse) by the medication, then that needs to be discussed with the doctor as well. Medication alone won't solve many issues, ASD related or not,...

Yes, especially when I was very young. I remember when I was about 6 or 7 being obsessed with the character Jimmy from HR Puffenstuff. I would imitate his actions, singing, dancing, even his voice-- which was a problem since his accent was British and I am from the US. I dropped the accent fairly qu...

Every time this happens near me I always say out loud, "Sorry about the small penis, dude," especially since it's pretty much always a dude doing it.

All the time, especially as "the autism spectrum" wasn't a thing until I was well out of school. An interesting side note to all of this is that although I was called "smart" a lot, it was usually in the form of an insult. Examples like, "You're smart, why don't you understa...

It's not that your life before was a lie-- you did what you thought you had to given the information you had. Now you have new information. That said, I had a very similar reaction when I was diagnosed and still do sometimes even two years on. Sometimes I feel "more autistic" than I was be...

I am not a clinician by any means and it is not my intention to contradict you, but I do believe you are confusing the colloquial meaning of the word "depression" from the clinical. Because of the way we colloquially use the word (e.g. "I'm so depressed that I had to miss out on Fred'...

The only group of friends I reliably had was in high school. Some might have been on the Spectrum (if it had existed at the time) but most probably would not have been. We WERE all misfits and shared intense interests. We also learned to tolerate the things that we didn't necessarily like in each ot...

I was diagnosed at age 50. I then spent the next 18 months questioning the diagnosis. It seemed "too easy" for a "label" to explain so many of life's challenges. Fortunately, I am beyond that point. I now accept the diagnosis and have adjusted my expectations accordingly. I've a...

What changed? Almost everything. And some of it is positive, and some is negative. But, it's so worth it for the security and understanding it brings, I think. I still go through a turmoil of emotions every week. At times, it's so painfully negative. It brings despair. I went through nearly 30 year...

I have a hard time understanding if there are other conversations going on around me, even if they're not particularly loud. TV on in the background is a HUGE problem for me as I can't understand anything anyone has said with a TV on. I've also had the frequent issue of asking someone to repeat what...
