I was wondering if anyone else tries to cope in the same way I do. I have struggled with depression on and off for the greater part of the last decade (since I was a teenager), and with counseling I have finally realized that each time I start to get depressed I get super involved, exercise a lot, eat super healthy, as a way to try to stop getting depressed (but not succeeding). It seems to be more of a subconscious action, I do not realize I am headed into depression, yet I start doing the actives that are suggested to mitigate or stop depression (but never seem to work). I am on a SNRI now and it is working well.

Does anyone else do this as they start to become depressed?

Does anyone have any better suggestions to keep depression at bay, so I do not repeatedly get depressed.

I posted this advice in another thread. It might be helpful to you.

Try to have someone or several people who you can talk to about your problems. You could say to yourself "I'm definitely going for a walk today" and try and have a walk around your local neighbourhood every day, possibly with somebody else.

You could watch a film every night and talk about it with friends or family or post here about it. You could plan a trip out every week even if it's just to go to the shops or maybe to the cinema.

I have been depressed before and getting through it is like pushing a boulder up a mountain but just try and do something every day that takes you out of your comfort zone. I don't know if this is any help or not or if this has already been said but this is what helped me.

I was lucky enough to have a friend who I saw every Sunday at a cafe where he worked and in his break time we would swap comics and talk about them. If you're creative you could think about writing a story or a poem about your feelings to get them out of your system, or maybe some fanfiction about your favourite programme. I used to go on fanfiction dot net a lot when I was depressed.

Hope this helps. Just PM me if you ever want to talk :)

I do go on fanfiction dot net a lot when I am depressed, and one of these days I will actually getting around to writting a one shot and posting it.

I generally manage to keep one, occasionally two actives going while I am depressed, but doing anything I am uncomfortable with or unsure about seems harder than trying to push an eighteen wheeler up a 30 percent grade all by myself.

Well as I say try and do little things that ease you out of your depression like going for walks and watching films and maybe consider seeing your doctor if your condition worsens. I'm sure there is medication you can take to help you with this but DON'T self medicate and make sure you have your doctor's approval of any drugs. It is a huge effort to get out of depression but you just have to say to yourself "I want to get better" and try and do things. I hope this is helpful and it doesn't sound like I'm being preachy or rabbiting on.

Just try to stay busy and go out with friends as much as possible. When you're at home do something that will distract you that you enjoy and deep breathing always helps if you start to feel anxious about something.

I do those things to deal with depression. Doesn't eliminate it or anything, but it gives me a sense of purpose and control and it keeps me feeling better physically.

I find that volunteering or doing stuff to help others helps, too.
