In an effort to avoid doing any real work, I downloaded the complete LOTR cycle to my kindle. I'm only to the point of the big conference in Rivendell. The writing gets a bit tedious there, but up to that point, I thought it was pretty good. I actually like Tolkien's general writing style, and appreciate his world building to a point...
I mostly read dark fantasy. If you want to see dry and monotonous try Robert E. Howard... I love his stories, but he over uses certain adjectives and stock phrases and his tone can get really pompous at times.
