The addition of anorexia contributes another control issue. I heard a Catholic priest once comment about the administration of his order that he had observed that it was important for men to have responsibility to control something or have something they were personally responsible for before the ag...

The take away here is that she needs to understand the hurt she could have caused in trying to gain what she desired. Shame, guilt, and remorse are painful yet useful emotions. Most can anticipate the pain that can be caused and act to restrain their desires to avoid that pain. It can be useful for ...

I pretty much ignore the "professional" descriptions of types and labels. I have not heard of any definitive reason for what is called Aspergers which I consider a simple neurological variant and not some as yet undiscovered pathology. While classical autism has definitive and observable b...

Not getting enough sleep can mess up everything else. I found when I was laid off that if I made a job out of getting a job, I could maintain a good sleep schedule. This meant getting up at the same time I would for work. I would take to bus to the library and read the paper to look at job listings....

Giving yourself a label when dealing with people may not be as useful as you anticipate. I have found using humor to describe a particularly noticeable trait is more useful. For example, the tendency to be a "little professor" can be explained by saying, "I'm sorry, I'm the type of pe...

Childhood abuse is difficult because you grow up without a frame of reference for what is normal (not counting TV which has its own problems). I experienced physical and emotional abuse. However, I suspect my parents turned to alcohol more because they were disappointed with each other more than me....

You might consider volunteering to visit someone in a retirement home if you could muster up some cheer to share. Being alone is far superior than being with someone who makes you miserable. Volunteer work might be able to take you out of yourself as you sound like you are sinking into a destructive...

There may also be a nutritional element to consider. If one considers that most of our food is grown on fields that have had most of the micronutrients and minerals depleted years ago and only replace with nitrogen and phosphorous, it would be a good idea to supplement with vitamins with minerals ge...

Many people marry and have a sort of Hallmark expectation of family life and children. When you consider that we are all born ignorant, selfish, and helpless, it is curious how strong these expectations can be. I would consider this to be an average level of parental disappointment. I suspect that m...

Aspergers may simply be a neurological variant. A few years ago it was reclassified as a sort of autism. Classical autism was the result of brain damage or malformation. What is now called a spectrum may actually be a collection of disparate unrelated conditions.

There are some actions people take to give them a sense of control. OCD, self harm, even eating disorders such as anorexia can be pursued in an attempt to alleviate anxiety by generating a compensating feeling of control. It might be helpful to help your son navigate these waters intentionally such ...

You might not be able to "tell" him anything, but you might engage him by questioning. If you can get him to respond to questions such as asking what strategies he plans on using to address the problems he sees, you might begin to draw him into a perspective where he sees things in terms o...

Sometimes we have to choose a path in life of total disconnection from others or some degree of social integration. The isolated life can find a preoccupation with consumption. However, this life tends to find consumption a hunger that is never satisfied. The alternative can be small steps to social...
