In many aspects of life you will face judgment because people don't see you for who you truly are, rather they see you simply for your ASD. In my own understanding it seems to mean not to let those people be determinant of who you are and what you can do.

This reminds me of a coworker that was on the spectrum a while back. He went through a shutdown a few months ago. He ended up heading out the back door, passing in front of everyone. While my other coworkers where confused as to what was happening I, being on the spectrum myself recognized what was ...

My mother-in-law has a roomate at her nursing home that I hate visiting because I can't understand what she says to save my life. The only piece of advice that I could give would be to try and understand her non-verbal ques and body language. As someone with ASD I realize that this may be a lot to a...

It is so hard dealing with depression. I dealt with it as a young teen, and for my entire life. I suffer from atypical depression and so it comes and goes. But when it is there, it is there. Some months I can't handle emotion or support from others. I remember when I was 16 I wouldn't even get out o...

I'll admit that I've had problems in social situations. That's just part of my ASD. But recently someone with no known neurological abnormalities that is close to me has started to exibit some. It is a complicated relationship, but she is my "mother in law." Not by marriage. Long ago my Fi...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Autism - Is it my fault being out of work for 4 years ?

I can relate to being out of work for extended periods of time. Before I started getting back out there in the working sector, and eventually finding the jobs that I currently hold, I was out of work for almost two years. I think this was due to the stress of the last stable job I had. I was working...

So I've always had this issue. I'm never really able to tell if someone is just being kind to me or flirting with me. Usually if I don't understand any given social situation I can use logic and deductive reasoning to be able to understand what's going on. Flirtation seems to be a little harder to g...

I think some people with HFA would fit into the category of GDD, speaking from a strictly diagnostic viewpoint, though others wouldn't meet the criteria. To my knowledge I never had any delays in the areas of speech or emotional development. Social development is a slightly different story.

Hello again to everyone! Recently, a friend started a new medication for anxiety called Buspirone, which is the generic for Buspar. She asked me to look up some information on it as the shape of the pills looked similar to another anxiety med that she had taken in the past and didn't like. While doi...

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. It has been getting up around the 100/F mark here in Texas every day for the last few weeks, plus it's almost always humid. Other than when I take my dog out to let him use the restroom, I try and stay inside and in front of the AC as much as possible. Luc...

You know that moment when you say the wrong thing without even meaning to, thinking you said what was appropriate and get those weird looks? That's what I hate. Situations like that. But I never hate myself.

I realize that it's a few years old, but it's an awesome game. I run Ubuntu Linux and even just running on Wine(you'll know if you run Linux) it works like a charm. I've always loved planning/management games(I suppose it has to do with my attention to detail) and Prison Architect fits the build for...

Yes, we have patchy skills. In our strong points, we can be very good and make people feel bad (I guess). This is a perfect example of me in math classes in school(It doesn't hurt that complex math is one of my special interests). I could either work out how to solve the problems before the teacher...

Do you think that due to the more literal, detail oriented and logic based thinking that is exhibited in most of us on the spectrum, there would be a higher rate of atheism in our community?

Anything that has a soupy texture is hard for me. Especially if it has a strong flavor to boot. Condiments are non-existent in my kitchen for that reason. And if something is cold and meant to be served hot, I have a hard time with it. I remember I was in training as a line cook at a local restauran...

To posit a guess I would say that we are more likely to wear glasses for comfort reasons(they are more comfortable than contacts), but it would be interesting to see what percentage of the ASD community wear glasses/contacts VS what percentage of the NT community do.
